Kokoda Trail
New Guinea, 1942
The fight for the Kokoda Trail in New Guinea cost the Japanese 6,500 dead; Australia had 625 dead and 1400 wounded, but for every man wounded in battle, ten were laid low from illness. Typhus, dysentery, ringworm, and malaria competed with crocodiles, biting ants, scorpions, Tiapans and Death Adders. Soldiers had to carry up to 100 lbs in 100 degree temperatures and hack a path through the jungle with machetes while facing constant surprise attacks due to limited visibility.
